NOVATO, Calif. (KGO) — In the North Bay, extreme heat is creating some unexpected challenges for nearly 100 seasonal firefighters attending Cal Fire’s first training academy of the year.
Ninety-five seasonal firefighters were giving it their all on Thursday. It’s Cal Fire’s training academy in the Napa Valley, where bootcamp workout meets team building and skill assessment.
“These are all the required skills firefighters must pass before going on to their assignments this summer,” said Cal Fire Deputy Chief, JC Greenberg.
Greenberg says extreme heat is giving the year’s first training class, a new set of challenges.

“Mid-March and we’re already seeing above 90-degree temperatures- firefighters are out here in their turnout gear, wildland gear,” Greenberg said.
Cooling stations are keeping returning firefighters hydrated, with lots of ice and water – drink it, or pour it on your head, whatever works. Kelly Schwenger is pushing through it.
“Hydration is key, electrolytes, staying on top of it, once you get behind you’re not going to catch up for the rest of the week,” said Schwenger.”
Large fans are keeping firefighters cool during training sessions.

“Trying to make sure we’re drinking plenty of water because fatigue is a thing. Especially in these turnouts, our muscles start to get drained really fast,” said Garrett Evans.
Evans is returning to Cal Fire for his fifth season. He admits, heat is all part of the job.
“Getting us acclimated early, couldn’t hurt,” said Evans.
Record-setting March temps remind these firefighters about the real time conditions they’ll be facing soon.
“But this is realistic for the job they have this summer, and really the importance on physical training, acclimation, staying hydrated so when they leave here this week, they’re in that mindset and we’re prepared,” Greenberg added.
