SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Rod Diridon Sr. known as “the father of modern transit” in Silicon Valley, has died. He was 87 years old.
Diridon helped to establish VTA in the 1970s, bringing light rail service to the South Bay.
He served 20 years on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, advocating for public transit and conservation.
Diridon also helped lead California’s effort to build high-speed rail.
After he retired from public office in 1995, San Jose Diridon Station was named in his honor.
He leaves behind a wife, two children and four grandchildren.
