A massive water main burst in Hollywood on Thursday night, leaving roads flooded and residents without water.
City officials said it was a 12-inch water main that ruptured at Oklahoma Street and State Road A1A.
Video taken by a local business shows where water first began pushing through the pavement, lifting and cracking the street. But things quickly escalated; the flow erupted and a massive jet of water began shooting out from the road.
Bruna Andride was staying at an Airbnb nearby when she said she witnessed the entire break from start to finish and called 911.
“Hearing some noise from the inside and we thought maybe it was raining. And when we figured [it out], it was water from there… It was a big hole. And then suddenly, it started by there in the middle, and then it was a whole thing, and people [were] crossing. It was crazy,” she said. “We packed. We’re ready to leave.”
At last check, Arthur to Nevada streets were seeing water service interruptions.
The repair work “will necessitate closing valves that will impact water service during the overnight hours. Roadway contractors are on standby to assist with the pavement repairs once the pipe is repaired. Motorists are asked to seek an alternate route to avoid delays,” officials said.
The manager of Hollywood Beach Hotels said five of their buildings would be without water for the next few days.
The cause of the break is still under investigation.
