After a student at Florida Memorial University reported that she was sexually battered at the campus over the weekend, additional security measures are being put in place, the university’s president said on Tuesday.
According to Miami Gardens Police, the incident happened on Sunday, and the victim told officers she was waiting at a bus stop when an unknown man began whistling at her.
The woman then left the bus stop and walked back toward campus to go to her dormitory, with the suspect following her, police said.
At one point, the suspect pinned the victim against a building door and sexually battered her before fleeing the area, authorities said.
Following concerns from students, FMU President William McCormick released a statement outlining additional safety measures.
- Strengthening Security Presence – There will be an increase in campus safety officers and patrols, with the Miami Gardens Police Department will be expanded
- Enhancing Access Control and Building Security – Additional personnel will be deployed to monitor entrances and to support identification verification
- Improving Lighting and Physical Safety Measures – Lighting across the university will be upgraded, and the security robotics system will be repositioned to expand patrol routes, increase real-time monitoring, and reporting coverage
- Promoting Awareness and Communication – Instructional safety material is being re-circulated, and the locations and proper use of the university’s emergency call boxes have been highlighted
The suspect in the alleged sexual battery remains on the loose.
