A suspect accused of fatally shooting a man in Miami Gardens on Friday was arrested, police said.
According to Miami Gardens Police, officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 3500 block of Northwest 213th Street.
Once at the scene, officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, and he was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police said the suspect fled the area in a white van but was then taken into custody.
The suspect’s identity or the charges they are facing were not released.
On Saturday, family members of the victim identified him as 45-year-old Gabriel Hubbert.
Hubbert’s family said he was a father of six and was very active in his church and within the community.
Signing with his church’s choir was one of the many things that brought Hubbert joy, his family said.
“They called him brother Gabe,” Joshua Hubbert said. “Everybody knew him as brother Babe.”
Joshua said his big brother was a loving father of six and a mentor to many.
“If he could help you, he’d help you,” he said. “He was a good person. You would never think of anything like that happening to him. This was somebody that everybody loved.”
Surveillance video captured the sound of back-to-back gunshots just after 6 p.m. that night.
The van the suspect was seen driving by Hubbert’s home about three minutes before the shooting.
“It’s sad. It hurt,” said “Never thought this would happen in a million years.”
Rodney Lewis said Hubbert was like a second dad.
“He was like a father figure to me,” Lewis said. “Mentor, leader, a coach.”
Now, a community is mourning after losing a key pillar.
“It still feels unreal to be honest,” he said. I’m still in shock.”
The shooting remains under investigation.
