A Florida man is suing the Martin County Sheriff’s Office after he said a database error landed him in jail for two weeks.
Michael Brewer said he was wrongfully arrested and charged as a felon after a national crime database listed a past case as a felony instead of a misdemeanor.
Authorities said they relied on that information when they arrested him for illegally possessing a firearm.
“I can’t believe this is happening,” Brewer said in body camera footage of his arrest.
Prosecutors eventually dropped the case against Brewer, but he’s now suing for false arrest, false imprisonment and malicious prosecution.
“I’m not a felon, I have a real estate license, I have a concealed carry license out of Kentucky,” Brewer told WPTV. “I’m speaking out because I don’t want anyone else to have to go through this.”
Officials said the error did not originate from their agency and was likely not updated properly by authorities in Kentucky.
