New video shows a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy being struck on the Florida’s Turnpike while he was helping out with a crash as he’s being honored for his heroic actions in pushing another officer out of harm’s way.
Deputy Leonard Cantave was recognized by the department Thursday with the Gold Medal of Valor, Lifesaving Award and Purple Heart.
The incident happened on Dec. 27, when Cantave had stopped to help the Florida Highway Patrol with a crash on the Florida’s Turnpike when he was struck by a vehicle.
Officials said Cantave risked his own life to save a Doral Police officer who was in the path of the oncoming vehicle.
A video released by the sheriff’s office included body camera footage of the incident and featured Cantave discussing why he didn’t think twice about saving the officer’s life.

“All I see is a bright light coming towards us, so all I can see and I can do is oh my gosh, we’re gonna get hit, so I just push him out of the way,” he said.
Cantave is still recovering from several injuries he suffered in the crash.
The driver accused of hitting him is facing several charges including reckless driving and DUI.
