A man and woman were arrested before they could boat a flight to Brazil at Miami International Airport after authorities said they found nearly 60 pounds of hashish in luggage.
Mekhi Jordon Goodlow, 23, of Los Angeles, and Lucia April Puertas, 24, of Tampa, were arrested at MIA on Friday night on cannabis trafficking charges, arrest reports said.
Goodlow and Puertas were detained before they could board a flight to Sao Paolo during an investigation by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
According to the reports, two suitcases under Puertas’ name were selected for inspection and were found to have a “strong odor.”
Inside were “several vacuum sealed packages containing a pasty substance resembling hash,” and when the substance was field tested it came back positive for hashish, the reports said.
In all, there were 27.19 kilograms of cannabis/hashish, or just under 60 pounds, the reports said.
During a search of Goodlow’s bags, two pairs of keys were found that opened Puertas’ luggage locks, the reports said.
Puertas and Goodlow appeared before a Miami-Dade judge over the weekend who set their bonds at $15,000 each.
