A Miami-Dade tax collector’s clerk is now behind bars after police say he was operating a scheme inside the office.
The employee, 46-year-old Waldersee Oge, was arrested on Thursday.
Police said Oge would get paid to secretly renew people’s licenses. An arrest report states that his own supervisor was shocked when she noticed him scanning documents into the state’s database without any customers in front of him—which is illegal in Florida.
Oge was allegedly caught using his position to get into the state’s data base to then clear people’s suspended licenses. Authorities said he would also issue temporary driving permits for customers without them being physically present.
At times, Oge was caught referencing his cell phone to gather information that he would input into the database.
Once confronted, police said he admitted to conducting multiple transactions and getting money in return as gifts.
The Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office put out a statement that read in part:
“Earlier this morning, an employee of the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office was arrested in connection with an ongoing investigation. Following months of investigative work conducted in coordination with law enforcement authorities, the employee was identified as being involved in conduct that is now part of an active criminal case. The matter was identified through internal processes, and immediate action was taken. The Office of the Tax Collector maintains a zero-tolerance policy for any conduct that violates the law or undermines the public trust. Our office is fully cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues.”
Oge was booked on six charges including misconduct, unlawful compensation for official behavior, and unlawful use of a communications device. He is expected to go before a judge on Friday.
