New details were released on Monday after a driver was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly struck a Miami-Dade deputy’s cruiser during a fatal crash investigation in Northwest Miami-Dade.
Yovany Izquierdo, 53, was charged with driving under the influence and DUI/damage to property or a person, Miami-Dade Jail records showed.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, a deputy arrived on Florida’s Turnpike on Northwest 135th Street and 47th Avenue for a traffic crash that involved an officer and a possibly impaired driver.
An arrest report said that when the deputy met with the other deputy at the scene, they said they were blocking traffic with their cruiser for a fatal crash that happened Friday night in the area.
The deputy said she saw a red pickup truck traveling westbound on 135th Street, failed to stop, and collided with her cruiser, the report said.
The driver, the report said, was identified as Izquierdo, and he had bloodshot watery eyes, his speech was slurred, and he had an order of an unknown alcoholic beverage on his breath.
Field sobriety tests were then administered, and Izquierdo did not “perform to standard,” the report said.
He was then arrested.
