Four people were killed overnight in a single-vehicle crash that resulted in the car catching fire in Long Beach, police said.
The crash was reported at 1:18 a.m. Saturday in the area of Lakewood Boulevard and East Spring Street. There, a 2008 Honda Accord with four passengers aboard hit the center median curb, making the driver lose control and hit the underpass center support wall, according to Long Beach police.
The crash caused the car to fully engulf in flames. Law enforcement and firefighters responded to the scene, where fire crews extinguished the flames.
One woman, who was an occupant of the car, was outside the vehicle when emergency personnel arrived. Despite first responders’ best efforts, the woman died of her injuries at the scene. Three other individuals, another woman and two men, were dead in the car.
Police said the identities of those who died are being held pending family notification.
The Long Beach Police Department said the National Transportation Safety Board reviewed footage of the crash and “responded on their own.” Police said they welcome the agency’s assistance. The department also noted that NTSB is focused solely on safety and is not involved in the investigation.
It’s unclear what caused the driver to hit the center median. The investigation is ongoing.
