Stop us if you’ve heard this before, but the Chicago area is facing down multiple chances of snow, and then a harsh cold snap, in coming days.
Those chances of snow will arrive on several different days this week, including chances for accumulating snow on Friday and Saturday, and will be followed by some of the coldest air of the season, with daytime highs potentially struggling to get out of the single digits on Saturday and Sunday.
There will be some stabilizing of the weather pattern next week, but until then it’s going to be a wintry weather fest in the Chicago area.
Here’s everything you need to know about the week ahead.
Tuesday Night
The warmest temperatures of the week will occur late Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, with readings approaching 40 degrees across a wide swath of the area according to forecast models.
Those temperatures will be accompanied by precipitation, which will mostly fall in the form of rain across the area, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team. Some parts of the Chicago area near the Wisconsin-Illinois state line could see mixed precipitation or even snow, as temperatures are expected to be around the freezing mark in those locations.
Some areas could see patchy ice accumulation, especially as temperatures start to dip overnight.
Wednesday Morning
Temperatures will start to decrease after a front moves through the area, and wind gusts will shift out of the north, ratcheting up in excess of 30-to-35 miles per hour during the morning hours.
Any rain leftover from the morning system will transition to snow, and there is a chance of snow squalls forming, which could impact the morning commute. Heavy snow could fall with those systems, with gusty winds causing visibility issues on area roadways.
Wednesday Afternoon
Most of the snow is expected to clear out of the area by the afternoon, but parts of northwest Indiana could see bands of lake-effect snow, according to forecast models.
Temperatures are expected to continue to dip through the afternoon, with gusty winds sending wind chills into the teens.
Thursday
Thursday should be mostly dry around the area, but it will also be cooler, with readings in the mid-20s across the region.
Friday
Friday will usher in another chance of snow, primarily south of Interstate 80, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
Temperatures will be on the chilly side, with readings in the 20s, but it’s nothing compared to the cold that will arrive in time for the weekend.
Saturday
Yet another chance of snow, this time area-wide, is expected on Saturday morning and into the afternoon, but this time it will be accompanied by a brutal cold snap.
High temperatures are only expected to be in the single-digits in the western suburbs, and will struggle to get to 10 degrees elsewhere in the area as the snow falls, leading to potentially nasty conditions on area roadways.
Wind chills will almost certainly be below zero on Saturday afternoon, with gusts of 10-to-15 miles per hour, according to forecast models.
Sunday
Temperatures could be even chillier on Sunday under partly-to-mostly sunny skies, with highs in the single digits and overnight lows falling below zero across most of the area.
Next Week
A slow warm-up is expected beginning Monday, with daytime highs returning to the 20s, and readings could get above freezing by midweek, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
