Santa Ana College followed suit of erasing César Chávez’s name from its campus Thursday following the disturbing allegations that the civil rights icon sexually assaulted girls and women.
Workers boarded up the signage at the César Chávez Business and Computer Center, which was established in 1994.
The president of Santa Ana College announced that the school would be covering up naming plaques, murals while removing Chávez-related photos from the school website and social media.
Three murals, including the “Legacy of César Chávez” painting by artist Emigdio Vasques inside the building were covered up.
“I heard they were covering up the names outside. I ran over there, took a moment of silence, just acknowledge the women and the school’s decision to cover up his name and hopefully rename this building,” said Helen Estrada, a student at Santa Ana College.
School officials said the murals are covered up to prevent vandalism while the school discuss what to do with thespace. The school’s Board of Trustees will meet on Monday to discuss next steps.
The Santa Ana Unified School District said it’s having a conversation about César E. Chávez High School and what to do with the name.
