Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis has officially launched her campaign for Congress ahead of the June primary, making a bid to return to Washington.
Solis, who has been the supervisor for LA County’s First District for over a decade, is running for 38th Congressional District, which includes Baldwin Park, Bell, Cudahy, Commerce, Diamond Bar and El Monte under the newly drawn congressional map.
Solis is not new to Washington D.C. as she served eight terms as a member of Congress and was the U.S. Secretary of Labor under President Barack Obama.
“I am running to ensure government works for the people, not the powerful, and to deliver results that improve the lives of every family in this district,” Solis said.
The congressional seat for the 38th District will be vacant as the current Rep. Linda Sanchez is running for the 41st Congressional District. Under the new map, the 41st District, currently held by Republican Rep. Ken Calvert, will move to include Democratic strongholds, including Whittier, Bellflower and Downey.
Solis faces several candidates, including Pico Rivera Councilmember Monica Sanchez and Whittier City Councilmember Erik Lutz, in the primary.
