A 35-year-old Florida woman charged with attempted murder and more than a dozen other crimes after shots were fired at the home of singer Rihanna and hip-hop star A$AP Rocky pleaded not guilty at a Wednesday court appearance in Los Angeles.
Ivanna Ortiz is accused of opening fire outside the music artists’ home with what authorities said was an AR-15 style rifle. Some rounds struck a gate and an Airstream travel trailer in the couple’s driveway.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were in the trailer at the time of the shooting.
No injuries were reported.
Ortiz is due back in court on April 8, when a date will be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence for her to stand trial.
Ortiz faces a charge of attempted murder with special allegations or personal and intentional discharge of a firearm and use of a firearm. Special allegations attached to criminal charges allow for increased penalties at sentencing. She also faces 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, all of which include special allegations of use of a firearm, and three counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling/vehicle.
In addition to gunfire at Rihanna’s property, Ortiz was charged with firing at a neighbor’s home, according to prosecutors.
Bail has been set to $1.875 million.
Witnesses told investigators that they saw someone in a Tesla driving back and forth before the gunfire Sunday afternoon outside the nine-time Grammy winner’s home in Los Angeles’ Beverly Crest neighborhood.
The shooting was reported at about 1:30 p.m. at the home that Rihanna shares with A$AP Rocky and the couple’s three children. The LAPD confirmed to NBC4 Investigates that Rihanna, A$AP Rocky and the children at the property at the time of the shooting, but no injuries were reported.
Ten people were at the residence at the time, according to police.
Ortiz, the only person in the car, was arrested about three miles away during a traffic stop in the west San Fernando Valley community of Sherman Oaks, police said. She was in possession of a 30-round magazine, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said Tuesday.
Large-capacity magazines, generally those holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition, have long been restricted under California law. In 2016, Prop 63 added a further restrictions on the possession of large-capacity magazines in California.
About seven to nine rounds were fired at the home, located in the Santa Monica Mountains on LA’s Westside. The front gate of the property appeared to be riddled with bullet holes. The Airstream trailer parked in the driveway also was struck by gunfire, police said.
A$AP Rocky loves being a family man. In a new episode of The New York Times’ “Popcast,” the 37-year-old rapper opened up about fatherhood and the budding personalities of his and Rihanna’s three children.
Details about a possible motive were not immediately available.
Law enforcement records show Ortiz has a history with police in Florida. The Orange County, Florida Corrections Department confirmed Ortiz was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence battery in June 2023 and violation of domestic injunction three months later.
In a Feb. 23 post on Ortiz’s Facebook page, Rihanna was mentioned and tagged.
Representatives for the celebrity couple did not immediately respond to NBC News’ requests for comment.
The “Umbrella” singer and “HIGHJACK” rapper welcomed their third child in September.
