The Oscars is leaving Hollywood. Well, the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, that is.
After its centennial in 2028, the Oscars will relocate from its longtime Hollywood home to downtown Los Angeles, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) said Thursday.
AMPAS and AEG announced a multi-year partnership that will move “Hollywood’s biggest night” from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood to L.A. Live in Downtown Los Angeles in 2029. The 4-million-square-foot sports and entertainment hub, which debuted in 2007, is adjacent to the Crypto.com Arena and about 9 miles from the Dolby Theatre.
AMPAS said the 101st Oscars ceremony will be held in a 7,100-seat space currently known as the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live. The ceremony will remain there through 2039.
The 2026 Academy Awards brought the house down with several shocking moments and many firsts. From Conan O’Brien’s zingers to Michael B. Jordan’s epic win, “Access Hollywood” is breaking down the top moments of the night.
AEG operates L.A. Live and, as part of the deal, will upgrade the theater’s stage, sound and lighting systems, lobbies, and backstage facilities prior to the annual award show’s big move.
“AEG will collaborate closely with the Academy to incorporate bespoke design elements needed to accommodate the Oscars ceremony,” a press release said.
Also beginning in 2029: The Oscars will be available on YouTube through “an exclusive global rights deal with the Academy,” AMPAS said Thursday.
Where will the 2029 Oscars red carpet be held?
AMPAS said L.A. Live’s expanded plaza will host those iconic red carpet celebrity arrivals and pre-show activities.
Oscars history at the Dolby Theatre
The Dolby Theatre opened in 2001 adjacent to Hollywood’s iconic TCL Chinese Theatre and across the street from El Capitan Theatre. It was known as the Kodak Theatre until 2012.
The venue, with seating for about 3,300 guests, has been home to the Academy Awards ceremony since 2002. The Dolby Theatre will host the 99th annual Oscars in 2027 and the milestone 100th Oscars in 2028.
When it’s not hosting the Oscars, the venue hosts many other events, including the iHeartRadio Music Awards, festivals, live comedy tours, the Latin American Music Awards, “America’s Got Talent,” the “American Idol” finals, and more. The theater also offers guided tours open to the public.
Prior to moving the Oscars to the Dolby Theatre, AMPAS held the award show at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion from 1968 to 1986 and then alternated between the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the Shrine Auditorium from 1987 to 2001.
Michael B. Jordan is officially an Oscar winner. Jordan took home Best Actor honors during the 98th Academy Awards for his dual role of twin brothers, Stack and Smoke, in “Sinners.”
