Connecticut is the self-proclaimed “basketball capital of the world,” and UConn fans are on the verge of winning something beyond national championships.
The Huskies’ basketball teams punched their tickets the Final Four over the weekend, with the men’s team earning a miracle Elite Eight win over Duke and the women’s team continuing its perfect season with a convincing victory over Notre Dame.
While both teams are still looking to add to their trophy cases, they are also on the cusp of cashing in on a major promotion.
Jordan’s Furniture announced its “Make the Finals” promotion in January, promising free furniture and mattresses for fans if both UConn basketball teams made it to the national championship game.
Fans who purchased Jordan’s merchandise items — including furniture, mattresses, accessories and more — between Jan. 20 and March 1 were automatically entered into the promotion. Those who entered will receive a rebate of the purchase price paid on their merchandise if the UConn men’s and women’s teams advance to the finals of both national tournaments.
The promotion was open to all Jordan’s customers, not just those living in Connecticut. The company also said there was no limit to the number of items a customer could purchase to remain eligible for the promotion.
Jordan’s has been doing sports promotions for decades, and it has had to pay out in the past. The company gave away $30 million in furniture after the Boston Red Sox’s 2007 World Series win.
Richard ‘Rip’ Hamilton says the excitement of the NCAA tournament is unlike anything else in basketball and believes UConn has what it takes to win another national championship. The Huskies legend also shared what he believes is the secret behind UConn basketball programs’ long-standing success.
Fans and Jordan’s will know their fate for the company’s latest marketing stunt this weekend. The UConn women will play either South Carolina or TCU in Phoenix on Friday, while the UConn men will battle Illinois in Indianapolis on Saturday.
While free furniture is a major win for fans, both UConn squads have more at stake as their tournaments wind down. Head coach Dan Hurley and the UConn men have a chance to win their third national championship in four years, while legendary coach Geno Auriemma and the UConn women can complete a perfect season and earn the program’s 13th national title.
The women’s national championship game will be held on Sunday, April 5, and the men’s national championship game will follow on Monday, April 6.
Diana Taurasi surprised future UConn center Olivia Vukosa with the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year Award.
