A severely injured puppy that lost most of its nose and suffered a dislocated jaw is receiving medical care as it begins a lengthy and complex recovery at Pasadena Humane, officials said Friday.
The puppy, named Peanut, arrived at the shelter with traumatic injuries on March 9 after being found in Sierra Madre, according to the organization.
Veterinary staff provided immediate care and are now overseeing a complex recovery process expected to take several weeks, shelter officials said. Because there is not enough skin to close the wound, Peanut’s nose is healing gradually from the inside out.
Veterinarians also placed a stent to keep his nostril open and allow him to breathe as the tissue heals, shelter officials said.
“Peanut still has a long healing journey ahead, but he’s already showing how resilient he is,” Pasadena Humane said in a statement.
“Despite everything, this little pup has been so brave,” the organization added.
Peanut is expected to require ongoing treatment, but is already showing signs of improvement, according to officials.
Pasadena Humane said donations to its Miracle Medical Fund help cover the cost of treating animals with severe injuries and other complex medical needs.
