President Donald Trump has endorsed former Fox News host Steve Hilton for governor of California, he announced on social media late Sunday night.
Hilton is one of two major Republican candidates running in this year’s wide-open gubernatorial race to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom, who cannot run for another term.
“With Federal help, and a Great Governor, like Steve Hilton, California can be better than ever before!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, in part, just before 10:30 p.m. “Steve Hilton has my COMPLETE & TOTAL ENDORSEMENT. He will be a GREAT Governor and, importantly, WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!!!”
The announcement comes as Democrats fear losing the governor’s office due to California’s “top-two” primary system and the crowded field of Democratic candidates. All candidates will appear on the ballot, regardless of party, and the top two vote-getters will advance to the November election — potentially making way for two Republicans in the run-off if Democrats split the votes too much.
A recent poll from the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies showed that as of March, Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco have the most support, with 17% saying they support Hilton and 16% supporting Bianco.
The eight major Democratic candidates are former U.S. Health Secretary and former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, former U.S. Rep Katie Porter from Orange County, former L.A. mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, billionaire businessman Tom Steyer, former state Controller Betty Yee, U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell from the Bay Area, and state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.
The UC Berkeley poll showed Swalwell and Porter with 13% of support. However, other polls have shown no clear front-runner and that many voters are still undecided.
The primary election is on June 2.
