Thousands of festivalgoers will descend on the Empire Polo Club in Indio for Saturday’s second day of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival headlined by Justin Bieber, after strong winds forced the cancellation of one set Friday night.
Bieber is scheduled to take the Coachella Stage at 11:25 p.m. Other performers Saturday will include The Strokes, Giveon, Addison Rae, Morat, PinkPantheress and Jack White.
Sabrina Carpenter headlined the festival’s opening day, which also marked the debut of Sabrina’s Pit Stop, a pop-up experience created in partnership with Airbnb. The installation, located at 82338 CA-111 and open through Sunday, features photo-themed displays, custom slushie stations and merchandise for sale.
“This is a full circle moment for me. I wouldn’t be here without my fans, so I wanted to create something special just for them. It’s not your typical pit stop — I wanted it to feel like a surrealist fantasy land of
mine,” Carpenter said.
Among the artists who performed across the festival’s eight stages Friday were Teddy Swims, The xx, Disclosure, Lykke Li, Joyce Manor, Moby, Swae Lee, Sexyy Red and Katseye.
Although no guests joined Carpenter to sing on stage, Susan Sarandon performed a monologue during her set and Will Ferrell performed a comedic bit when the lights on the stage seemed to go out and he acted as the repairman.
Teddy Swims was joined Friday by surprise guest Joe Jonas to perform “When You Look me in The Eyes.”
Swims was later joined by Vanessa Carlton to perform “A Thousand Miles” and by David Lee Roth to perform the Van Halen classic “Jump.”
Snoop Dogg also made a surprise appearance during Hugel’s DJ set.
On Friday night, the Italian-American DJ Anyma, along with Coachella officials, decided to cancel his performance due to strong winds affecting the stage build.
“Coachella and Anyma have made this decision together with your safety as a priority,” according to a message projected on the stage screen. Anyma was scheduled to close the main stage Friday. No additional performances were canceled due to the winds, but the gusts destroyed many campers’ tents, leaving some people to chase after their canopies and belongings.
More windy weather was expected Saturday night with winds around 20 mph and gusts of up to 30 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
The Indio Police Department on Thursday urged attendees and nearby residents to call the department’s non-emergency line for concert-related concerns such as loud music or excessive noise, parking or traffic issues and loitering. The non-emergency line is at 760-391-4051.
The festival’s first weekend concludes Sunday with Karol G headlining, and other acts such as Young Thug, Wet Leg, Laufey, Roz, Foster The People, Iggy Pop and Fatboy Slim. Weekend Two will take place April 17-19 at 81-800 51st Avenue. Gates open at 1 p.m.
