Waymo and Waze are teaming up to record and report potholes to transportation departments in Los Angeles in hopes of helping to improve the roads.
The companies announced their partnership on Thursday as part of a joint pilot to “help cities patch their potholes,” they said in a press release. The initiative will use Waymo’s feedback systems to detect the potholes, then send that date to city and state Departments of Transportation.
“The data will also be visible to Waze users in the cities where Waymo operates, keeping road users safe by alerting them as they approach a pothole,” the press release read. “Like other on-road features reportable in the Waze app, users will be able to verify the Waymo-identified potholes, increasing the data’s accuracy.”
According to the news release, Waymo has already identified about 500 potholes.
Los Angeles is among five cities selected for the pilot, joining San Francisco, Phoenix, Austin and Atlanta.
