One person was killed and at least 11 others, including students, were sent to hospitals after a school bus collided with a car in suburban Manhattan, authorities said, with roads expected to be closed for hours as an investigation remains ongoing.
The crash, between a school bus and a passenger vehicle, happened about 8:25 a.m. near the intersection of Manhattan Monee and Kankakee Roads, the Manhattan Fire Protection District said in a release. According to the release, the bus was transporting Manhattan School District students.
The bus was carrying 10 students and one driver, officials said. The students and driver were evaluated at the scene and transported to nearby hospitals “due to the severity of the accident,” the fire district added.
Administrative staff from School District 114 also responded to the scene, along with the Illinois State Police, the Manhattan Police Department and multiple other fire crews, officials said.
One fatality was confirmed within the passenger vehicle, authorities said. No major injuries were reported among the children on the bus.
Manhattan Monee Road between Schoolhouse and Cedar Roads was expected to be closed “until further notice,” as an investigation continues, police said.
“Please avoid the the area and use alternate routes,” the fire district said, adding that more information was expected to follow.
