Parts of the Chicago area could see difficult travel conditions overnight thanks to dense freezing fog that’s developed in Indiana.
According to the National Weather Service, that fog is already causing issues with visibility in Northwest Indiana, with Valparaiso law enforcement telling NWS officials that visibility has been dramatically reduced on Saturday evening.
According to NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologist Kevin Jeanes, that fog could start to push westward toward the state line, and could ultimately impact roads in far-eastern Illinois, especially along and east of Interstate 57.
The fog will not only cause visibility issues, potentially slashing visibility to less than one-quarter of a mile, but it could also cause a light glaze of ice on roadways, especially on elevated and untreated surfaces.
While the fog will start to dissipate early Sunday morning in Illinois, it could persist past sunrise in parts of Indiana, especially east of Interstate 65, according to Jeanes.
Motorists are urged to use caution if they’re on the road Saturday night, allowing for extra stopping distance, slowing down and using low-beam headlights in foggy conditions.
