Spring break is almost here, but recent unrest in Mexico may have travelers concerned about their travel plans.
Guadalajara is one of Mexico’s most popular travel destinations, but the city has seen unrest after the death of cartel kingpin Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes also known as “El Mencho,” during an operation by the Mexican military over the weekend.
Now, NBC 5 Responds found airlines are making accommodations for travelers who already booked flights.
American Airlines’ policies seem to have the most wiggle room. If you’re flying to Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta before February 25, you can reschedule your flight as long as you don’t change your origin or destination city. You’ll have one year from the original ticket date to complete the trip, and you’ll have to cover any fare changes.
Viva Aerobus, a partner with Air Canada, is offering adjustments to passengers at no cost.
According to the airline, you can make a “One-time date change at no cost for travel from February 23, 2026, and up to 30 calendar days later, on the same route.”
NBC 5 Responds spoke with a North Shore travel agent who says about a dozen of her clients are impacted by this situation. But she reminds us this unrest in Mexico is only impacting certain areas.
“What I have heard from partners on the ground is that is this situation is quite regionalized right now. So everything is fully operational in Cabo. Everything is fully operational and Mexico City as well as Riviera Maya. So right now, those places are in good shape,” Kelly Smith said.
Some travel insurance policies do not cover civil unrest, government alerts, or safety related cancellations, so read through all of the terms and conditions of your policy to see what’s covered.
It’s important to note: this is a developing situation and airlines may continue to alter their policies based on what is happening on the ground. As your spring break travel date approaches, it’s best to check directly with your airline and hotel or resort to discuss your options if you do not feel safe traveling.
