Danise Baird, the wife of U.S. Rep. Jim Baird of Indiana’s 4th Congressional District, died from complications related to injuries sustained in a car accident, the congressman’s office said on Sunday.
Jim Baird and Danise Baird were both hospitalized in January after their vehicle was struck in a car accident, the Republican’s office said at the time. According to the lawmaker’s office, the congressman was expected to make a full recovery.
President Donald Trump said the congresswoman’s wife was also hospitalized, but details on her condition weren’t immediately available.
A statement following Danise Baird’s death read, in part: “Congressman Baird and Danise were married for 59 years, building a life centered on faith, family, and service. A devoted wife and loving mother of three, she was the foundation of their family and will be deeply missed. We ask that you keep the Congressman and his family in your prayers during this difficult time.”

Elected officials across the state expressed condolences following Danise Baird’s passing.
Rep. André Carson, a Democrat who represents Indiana’s 7th Congressional District, said on X, “I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of Danise Baird. I’m praying for Rep. Baird and the entire family as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.”
Gov. Mike Braun also commented on X, saying, “I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of Danise Baird. I’m praying for Rep. Baird and the entire family as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.”
Rep. Jim Baird, who lost his left arm while serving in the Vietnam Warm, was first elected to Congress in 2018. He is 80 years old.
