With Election Day for the 2026 primary just around the corner, many may be wondering how the big day will impact mail service.
Because Election Day on March 17 is not a federal holiday, residents waiting on a package or important letter don’t need to worry about potential delays from a day off.
Other federal offices and entities, like banks, will also be open.
And though the general Election Day on November 3 is a holiday in Illinois, meaning state offices will be closed, the primary Election Day is not.
A change to the USPS postmark rules means those voting by mail should have sent their ballots before Election Day to ensure their vote is counted, bringing an end to the days of voters rushing to the post office before closing.
