Chicago’s outdoor running season got its unofficial start Sunday as athletes competed in the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle.
The race is a fast-moving affair and featured plenty of drama in the men’s division, with Canadian distance runner Mohammed Ahmed taking down the top spot in that race Sunday.
Ahmed, who won a silver medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the 5,000-meters, completed the 8-kilometer (roughly 4.97 miles) course in a time of 22:59, finishing five seconds ahead of Chandler Gibbens and 10 seconds ahead of JP Flavin on the course.
Stephen Jones and Ethan Gregg rounded out the top-five finishers in that race.
In the women’s division the margin of victory was slightly more comfortable for American runner Emma Grace Hurley, as she crossed the finish line with a time of 24:28, 28 seconds ahead of Karissa Schweizer.
Courtney Frerichs, Claire Green and Erin McDonald rounded out the top-five.
The men’s wheelchair race went to Ethan Burkhart in a time of 26:05, and the women’s wheelchair race was won by Hannah Babalola, who finished in a time of 24:18.
The race will continue until roughly 11 a.m., with more than 20,000 runners participating. You can view the stream in the player above, then get the full finish line camera feed on NBC Chicago’s YouTube page later in the day.
