A 14-year-old boy has died after the vehicle he was sitting in was struck by an out-of-control vehicle Sunday night in suburban Homewood.
According to Homewood police, a Chevrolet SUV was being driven by a 36-year-old man southbound on Governor’s Highway when for unknown reasons the driver veered off the roadway to the left.
The Chevrolet then struck multiple vehicles at the intersection with 183rd Street, including a Nissan SUV that a 27-year-old driver and a 14-year-old passenger were sitting in.
That 14-year-old passenger, identified as Kyran Smith of Homewood, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
The Chevrolet then struck a Buick sedan, with the driver and passenger in that vehicle being hospitalized with minor injuries.
The driver of the Chevrolet attempted to flee the scene on foot, but was taken into custody by responding police, officials said.
No additional information was available about charges in the case, and an investigation remains underway.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Homewood police at 708-206-3420.
