Heart-stopping body camera video released by Milwaukee police shows an officer clinging to a tow truck during a dramatic incident that ended when the officer fatally shot the driver.
Police on Friday released footage of the March 12 incident, which began when an officer approached a flatbed tow truck driven by Jonathan Otto, who was wanted on a parole violation, reported WTMJ, the NBC affiliate in Milwaukee.
Authorities said Otto refused to exit and drove away with the officer holding onto the side of the truck.
Footage captured the officer saying “get out,” just as the suspect rolled up the window and took off.
“S—, you better stop,” the officer said. “Oh stop!”
WTMJ reported the officer’s partner radioed for assistance, saying, “My partner’s hanging on the flatbed of a truck going eastbound on Rogers from 12th Street. White flatbed.” The vehicle was traveling roughly 30 miles per hour as it continued for several blocks.
Video showed the officer threatened to shoot Otto, the driver, if he didn’t stop. When the driver continued, the officer opened fire.
Otto was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
The officer, a veteran of 21 years, was treated for non-fatal injuries sustained during the incident. He was placed on administrative leave, which is a standard procedure following officer-involved shootings.
