Chicago-area residents know the drill by now. Enjoying sudden summer-like temperatures in the springtime comes with the likelihood that stormy weather is on the way.
The Chicago area could reach 80 degrees on Sunday through Tuesday, a steep jump from Saturday’s high of 55 degrees.
According to NBC Chicago Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes, the significant warmup in Chicago and a spike in humidity for the first few days of the week is caused by an active weather pattern moving across the country next week.
The spike in warmth and humidity sets the stage for potentially strong storms as the trough in the jet stream moves through the Plains early next week, according to Jeanes.
“Summer-like temperatures will give way to waves of showers and storms starting tomorrow and lasting through midweek,” the National Weather Service said in a post on social media. “Note that many hours will be dry, so the upcoming stretch won’t be a wash out. Nevertheless, a few storms may be severe, particularly anytime after Monday night.”
The threat level of severe weather on Tuesday and Wednesday is a two out of five, according to NWS.
