The Chicago area could see multiple rounds of severe weather this week as warm and humid weather is expected to take hold in the region.
According to the Storm Prediction Center and the NBC 5 Storm Team, parts of the Chicago area could see severe storms for multiple days in a row, with all threats on the table including isolated tornadoes and heavy rain.
Before those chances of severe weather arrive, the Chicago area will see warm and windy conditions on Sunday, with wind gusts in excess of 30 miles per hour at times. Temperatures are expected to climb into the low-80s across the region, according to forecast models.
As the sun sets, the chance for showers and embedded thunderstorms will slowly increase, and though there isn’t an expectation of severe weather on Sunday, those storms could still produce some heavy downpours and gusty winds.
While Monday will also be warm and humid, there is also a chance for severe weather in the area, especially along the Wisconsin-Illinois state line, where the Storm Prediction Center has the region at a “slight” risk of severe storms, the second of five levels they use to project weather impacts.
Parts of the Chicago area north of Interstate 80 will also be at a “marginal” risk of severe weather Monday evening, the first of the five SPC levels.
The main threats with any storms that develop will be gusty winds in excess of 60 miles per hour, along with heavy rainfall and a chance for some hail.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to persist into Tuesday morning, but the main event for severe weather will arrive in the afternoon and evening, as the entire Chicago area will be at a “slight” risk of powerful storms. All severe weather threats will be on the table, including isolated tornadoes, according to the SPC.
Wednesday will again see a risk of severe weather, with highs in the 70s and humid conditions still persisting.
While storms are possible again Thursday, the weather will likely start to calm down just a little bit, with a minimal severe threat at this time according to forecast models.
Highs will stay in the 70s Thursday and rise back into the 80s Friday under partly cloudy skies.
