Military officials have closed the main gate to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in North County San Diego due to an unaccompanied package, according to the U.S. Marines.
A spokesperson for Camp Pendleton said the discovery of the unattended package around 5 a.m. prompted them to shut down the gate so security personnel could investigate. The spokesperson did not elaborate further.
It was unknown when the base would reopen.
California Highway Patrol said crews have also shut down the northbound I-5 off-ramp to Vandergrift Blvd/ Harbor Drive and that drivers in the area should expect delays.
Camp Pendleton was one of several military bases that increased security measures after the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran.
This is a developing story. Details may change as information is released.
