No team has won more Mountain West Conference basketball championships than San Diego State. They still have a chance to grab one more before heading to the Pac 12.
The Aztecs got a career night from B.J. Davis to hold off UNLV 89-86 on Friday night at Viejas Arena, finishing the regular season with a 20-10 record and setting up a fairly simple Saturday scenario: if New Mexico beats Utah State, then the Aztecs would finish in a three-way tie atop the Mountain West with the Lobos and Aggies and all three schools can hang a conference title banner.
SDSU had all kinds of trouble slowing down Rebels guard Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn. The Illinois transfer played all 40 minutes, scoring 32 points along the way. His effort likely would have been enough to give UNLV the win had it not been for Davis. With 12:34 to play and the Rebels leading 53-50, the junior guard knocked down a 3-pointer to tie it up.
He kept on shooting, and there was no reason for him to stop. Davis proceeded to score 21 points in 12 minutes, finishing the night with a career-high 30 and sending the Aztecs into next week’s Mountain West Conference Tournament in Las Vegas with a much-needed momentum boost. San Diego State sits squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble and might be in a position where they have to win the MWC tourney and the automatic trip to March Madness that comes with it to hear their name called on Selection Sunday.
