Family members identified the man killed in a hit-and-run crash on March 1 in the Clairemont area of San Diego. Andrés Gallardo Bledsoe, a 43-year-old father, was killed while riding his bike that Sunday evening on Ashford Street.
NBC 7’s Dave Summers heard a plea for help from his sister and brother-in-law.
Bledsoe was a native of Chile, the father of a 16-year-old son, and now the son of a grieving mother.
His brother-in-law, Juan Gonzalez, and sister, Estefania, are speaking on behalf of their brother in hopes someone can help.
“It is really devastating. A lot of sorrow and being sad. We have tried to find out on our own, tried to investigate a little bit what happened,” Gonzalez said.
Police say Bledsoe was riding his bike north in the parking lane of Ashford Street near Marlesta. He was hit from behind the driver took off.
San Diego County Bike Coalition spokesperson Ian Hembree says the first such collision happened in 2014.
“It shows this is an area that has some level of history of crashes before,“ Hembree said.
Two such collisions in 12 years isn’t necessarily a pattern but Hembree points out nearby Clairemont Drive has a history of fatal accidents. It’s a busy, fast traffic area with a bike lane. The community plan update includes much more bike infrastructure to be built there.
Police say the driver did not even slow down to help Bledsoe. The cyclist later died of his injuries at the hospital.
“This so tragically happened living there with no, without help, is something that has us very sad,“ Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez says the family received useful information from neighbors. Traffic investigators are asking for clues that may have been recorded on doorbell and security cameras in the area.
“We want to find out what happened to relieve our heart and find out who did it,” Gonzalez said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Diego Police Traffic Division.
