Nick Pivetta shrugged off a disappointing Opening Day start, and the Padres avoided getting swept – beating the Giants 7-1 to close out their season opening homestand.
Ramon Laureano belted his second home run of the season in the eighth inning, a two run shot to punctuate the win.
After giving up six runs in three innings to the Tigers, the ace of the Padres 2025 staff was in control from the beginning against San Francisco. Pivetta struck out eight in five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks.
Pivetta struck out Patrick Bailey to leave two stranded in the second inning, before striking out the side in order in the third. The righty did not allow another hit after surrendering a leadoff single to Luis Arraez in the second inning.
Craig Stammen’s team tallied the first run of the game in the opening frame. San Diego State product Casey Schmitt was charged with an error at first base when he failed to bring in a throw from Matt Chapman to retire a hustling Manny Machado. Jackson Merrill scored on the error.
Chapman and Schmitt failed to connect again in the fifth, allowing Xander Bogaerts to reach safely and Fernando Tatis Jr. to score.
Gavin Sheets provided insurance in the sixth inning, driving in Ramon Laureano with his second double of the day.
After Laureano’s blast Fernando Tatis Jr. scored Jake Cronenworth on an infield single. Xander Bogaerts followed with a bases loaded walk.
The Padres are off Thursday before beginning their first road trip of the season Friday in Boston.
