Just hours after ringing in the new year, flames gushed from the top floor of an apartment complex in Calverton, Maryland as smoke filled the night sky.
Prince George’s County Fire and EMS say first responders took a baby to the hospital for evaluation, not specifying for what reason but said the baby is expected to be okay. Two adult residents were also displaced.
The fire happened before 2 a.m. Thursday on Lighthouse Way.
Firefighters had to rescue multiple residents from balconies, and two adults were displaced from their apartment.
“It’s sad,” said Ronald Huggins, a resident. “Sad because me, I’m here by myself, right? But I just can imagine somebody with a child, and it’s like waking up New Year’s Day. It’s gotta be devastating.”
By Thursday afternoon News4 saw multiple bags of debris scattered across the backend of the apartments.
Residents of the apartment complex received a message from management saying that they would be without “any hot water” due to the fire and that crews were working to fix the problem.
Huggins told News4 he was also without power, which was a concern due to the cold temperatures.
“If it would have happened in the summer, it would’ve been bad as well, but you know it’s gonna be like 22 degrees tonight, and it’s been pretty cold today,” he said.
Clean up efforts continued throughout the night.
“Beginning of the year, you have a child having to deal with something like this. You have a family having to deal with such misfortunes,” Huggins said. “[…] it’s sad.”
News4 was told the Prince George’s County Office of Emergency Management is helping out the two people who were displaced by the fire. News4’s efforts to contact the residents who were displaced by the fire were unsuccessful.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
