A community is grieving after a collision just after 11 a.m. Wednesday on Lockwood Drive, near both the White Oak and Burnt Mills areas of Silver Spring, left a 15-year-old girl dead.
Her name has not been released.
The crash happened right in front of Salifu Mack’s home. He says he immediately ran out to help.
A white Lexus sedan hit a utility pole hard.
He quickly realized the two backseat passengers, both young women, were badly injured and an ambulance was urgently needed to help them.
Montgomery County police say the 18-year-old driver of the white Lexus was on Lockwood Drive approaching Burnt Mills Avenue when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control, hit another car and then slammed into the utility pole.
The 15-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 20-year-old woman was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
The Lexus driver and a third woman in that car suffered what police referred to as minor injuries.
The driver of the car the Lexus hit was not injured.
Neighbors gathered to watch as crews replaced the utility pole Wednesday evening.
They believe this section of Lockwood Drive, which has a 30 mile per hour speed limit, needs more measures to slow down traffic.
The intersection near the scene has only two stop signs. Neighbors told News4 they’d like to see it made into a four-way stop.
