Millions of WSSC customers in Montgomery County and Prince George’s County are being asked to continue limiting their water use through the weekend, as the cold weather increases stress on the water system.
WSSC issued the request for customers to limit water use to the essentials on Tuesday, because of 33 water main breaks and leaks brought on by the frigid temperatures. That request remains in effect as the extreme cold continues until Monday.
Water is safe, and there is currently no boil water advisory in place for the 1.9 million affected customers in Maryland. In fact, WSSC said in a release about the extended request, following their guidelines could prevent a boil water advisory from becoming necessary.
Officials are asking customers to:
- Use water only as necessary – i.e., take shorter showers and quickly turn off faucets from running at full force.
- Limit flushing toilets (do not flush after every use).
- Limit using washing machines and dishwashers (use when fully loaded).
Following those guidelines will help prevent a boil water advisory and help preserve water for system storage and fire protection as crews work to repair breaks and leaks, officials said.
With colder temperatures also comes higher risk for leaks – water exapands when it freezes, which puts extra pressure on pipes.
Leaving faucets drip even when they are not being used can help prevent freezing, as this will keep the water moving.
