Three people are hurt after U.S. Park Police tried to pull over a stolen car and the driver took off and crashed into a tree near the Tidal Basin on Thursday night, authorities say.
Two people have injuries that Park Police described as “potentially serious/life-threatening.”
Park Police say they attempted a traffic stop on a “confirmed stolen vehicle” near Hains Point but the driver refused to stop.
Officers used a device to pop the car’s tires, but the driver sped away, made it about 2 miles and crashed into a tree near Inlet Bridge, which is near the 14th Street Bridge and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.
The vehicle caught fire, and officers pulled out three people. All three were taken to hospitals, with two people seriously hurt.
D.C. Fire and EMS say they were dispatched to the crash scene at 9:45 p.m. and that all three people in the car were adult men. A Park Police helicopter also responded.
