Severe storms are expected to hit the Washington, D.C., area on Monday, leading several school districts to announce closures and early dismissals.
Damaging winds and tornadoes will be possible. There’s a level 4 out of 5 threat level for severe weather in much of the D.C. area.
“This is one of the most elevated severe weather risk days in several years,” Storm Team4 Meteorologist Chuck Bell said.
The main threat window is 3 p.m. through 9 p.m. Here’s the forecast.
Most districts announced early dismissals, while some are calling off classes entirely. Here’s a full list of closures and delays.
OPM status
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management announced that federal workers have the option for unscheduled leave or telework.
School closures
Several public schools in Virginia will be closed, including Culpeper County, Fredericksburg and Stafford County

- Fairfax County Public Schools (three-hour early dismissal)
- Manassas City Public Schools
- Manassas Park City Schools
- Prince William County Public Schools
In general, school districts also canceled after-school and evening activities. Check with your district for more details, including information about school bus schedules.
Some schools are monitoring the forecast
Alexandria City Public Schools said it’s “closely monitoring the weather forecast” and will continue to track conditions throughout the day and will communicate promptly if weather conditions require adjustments, including the possibility of an early dismissal.
Falls Church City Public Schools said it will open on time and share updates Monday morning.
Loudoun County Public Schools said it’s monitoring the forecast.
