A 44-year-old man faces numerous attempted murder and firearms charges after police say he shot at multiple people on the Beltway in Maryland. One man was shot in the leg, state police said.
Kendrick Lamont Savoy, of Lothian, was arrested Tuesday afternoon, about 16 hours after the shootings along I-495 in Prince George’s County, Maryland State Police said.
Investigators said the first shooting happened at 10:35 p.m. Monday. A driver said a bullet hit their car while they were traveling on Maryland Route 5 near Allentown Road.
Then, five minutes later, a mother, father and young child were in a car going north on Route 5 when they took the exit to Interstate 95. As they were driving on the exit ramp, Savoy got out of his car that was parked on the shoulder and shot multiple rounds at their car, Maryland Department of State Police Superintendent Col. Michael A. Jackson said. The family kept going until they reached somewhere safe to call police.
No one was hurt in the first two shootings.
A driver was shot in the leg during the third shooting just before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday on southbound I-495 near Ardwick Ardmore Road, Jackson said. He managed to drive himself to the hospital and was later released.
After the shootings, police released photos of the suspect and the suspect’s red Dodge Challenger.
The state police Forensic Sciences Division processed all three scenes for evidence with officers from Prince George’s County helping in the investigation.
Prince George’s County police arrested Savoy after pulling over a car matching the description of the suspect’s car in Temple Hills Tuesday afternoon.
“Let this arrest send a clear message: Those who endanger our community will be identified, pursued and held accountable,” Jackson said during a Wednesday news conference.
Police said the motive for the shootings still isn’t clear and the shootings appear to be random.
Records show Savoy has a lengthy criminal history, and Jackson said police aren’t ruling out that he could be connected to other unsolved roage rage shootings.
Savoy is being held in jail without bond in Prince George’s County.
