A man was seriously injured, five firefighters suffered burns and a dog was killed Monday after a Landover Hills, Maryland, home caught fire, officials said.
Firefighters responded to a home in the 7400 block Allison Street about 7:45 a.m., Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department said.
Flames were erupting from the roof of the single-family home, and the fire spread to a shed behind the house.
A 25-year-old man was rescued from the basement by firefighters and rushed to a hospital. He’s stable, but in critical condition.
Officials said the fire department initially received reports that there may be children trapped in the home, but were able to quickly confirm those children were actually already at school when the fire broke out.
However, as firefighters searched the home, five of them sustained minor burns and had to be taken to the hospital for evaluation.
“It gets really hot and really intense, but our people are dedicated to the mission, and when we were told that there were children in there, they kept moving forward to search the structure until we got the confirmation that they were at school,” assistant chief Bryan Spies said.
Two dogs were rescued from the home. One survived.
Firefighters spent 20 minutes fighting the flames before the fire was extinguished.
Video from the scene shows extensive damage inside and outside the home.
Investigators are trying to figure out what started the fire.
