Millions of people around the United States are gathering on Saturday for the third “No Kings” protest against President Donald Trump and his administration.
Dozens of those protests are in and around Washington, D.C., in the form of marches, student-organized events at local universities and “bridge brigade” groups stationed on pedestrian bridges.
This Saturday’s round of No Kings protests was first planned in January, in the wake of the deaths of two Americans in Minnesota — Alex Pretti and Renee Good — at the hands of federal agents.
Since then, Trump has faced further public scrutiny over the war with Iran, rising gas and grocery prices, his mass deportation agenda and the tactics used to execute it, among other issues.
For Jane Jensen, an Arlington protester that spoke with News4 on Saturday morning, the protests are about preserving democracy and ensuring a better future for her family.
“I’m in the neighborhood, and this is close,” Jensen explained. “And I just wanted to, in every way, express my support for American democracy, the American constitution, American freedoms. And it’s particularly important to me because I’m a new grandmother, and I want my daughter to have the same freedoms that I had, instead of less. And I want my grandson to be able to vote in free and fair elections, like I did.”
It was Jensen’s first time participating in a bridge brigade protest, she said.
“We need to do what we can to preserve those institutions, and make America great again,” Jensen said.
