A woman was hospitalized in critical condition early Sunday after being shot by police officers in an incident that, officials said, unfolded along Eire Avenue in the Hunting Park section of North Philadelphia.
According to police, the shooting happened after officers responded to a report of a person with a gun along the 900 block of West Erie Avenue at about 4:11 a.m. on Sunday.
At that time, officials claim, the responding officers encountered a 35-year-old woman who had a firearm held to the right side of her head.
After issuing commands for her to drop the weapon, officials said, the officers used a taser on her, but it had no effect.
The woman, officials said, then fled across Erie Avenue, before is alleged to have pointed the firearm at the responding officers.
At this point, officials said, the officers — a 36-year-old man with three years on the force and a 25-year-old man who has been an officer for two years, both assigned to the department’s 25th police district — fired their handguns at the woman, striking her multiple times.
The woman, officials said, was taken to a nearby hospital where she was listed in critical condition.
At the scene, police recovered a loaded .22 caliber handgun with an obliterated serial number, as well as one round in the chamber and another 19 bullets in the magazine.
Body warn cameras, officials said, were worn and were activated during the encounter.
The woman, who police did not immediately provide further identifying information on, has been charged with aggravated assault on police and weapon offenses.
No officers or any other civilians were injured in this shooting, police said.
Both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty pending an investigation into the incident, officials said.
An investigation into this incident, officials said, is still ongoing.
