Camden City School District welcomes new superintendent

The Camden City School District has appointed a new superintendent.

Alfonso Llano, a veteran educational leader with nearly three decades of experience in public education, was selected.

Llano has served as superintendent of Vineland Public Schools since June 2021.

“Superintendent Alfonso Llano is the proven and innovative leader that Camden needs to advance the district,” Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen said in a news release. “We are so pleased to complete the search process, and I am grateful to the New Jersey State Board of Education, NJDOE Commissioner Kevin Dehmer, and the selection committee for identifying someone who will bring meaningful change for Camden’s Students.  Camden transformation is real, and tangible progress is being made in economic development, public safety, infrastructure upgrades, park improvements, housing values are increasing, and this progress is being seen in every neighborhood citywide.

Carstarphen added, “The selection of Superintendent Llano is proof that talented individuals want to be a part of Camden’s revitalization.  Mr. Llano has a proven academic record and is known for demonstrating a deep commitment to working with parents and teachers.  I am confident he will be an excellent leader who prepare our students for the future and always puts out students’ academic interest first.”

Llano succeeds Katrina McCombs, who stepped down last year to take a statewide job.

“Camden is a strong and diverse community, and our progress comes from working together,” said Senator Nilsa Cruz-Perez.  “We welcome our new superintendent and look forward to collaborating to ensure every child receives the efficient and thorough education they deserve.”

There is no timeline for when Llano begins his new position.
