We’ve issued a First Alert for all of our neighborhoods for the next three days due to dangerous cold.
Wind chills will range from negative 5 degrees to negative 20 degrees depending upon your neighborhood.
Frost bite can begin in as little as 20 minutes with a wind chill at negative 20.
Though the next few days will be mostly sunny and partly cloudy, that sunshine will be deceiving.
Wake-up air temperatures will be in the single digits and highs will only be in the teens/low 20s for the next few days.
This is expected to be the coldest sustained air in at least a decade.
Protecting yourself from dangerous cold
In order to protect yourself while enduring the elements while at the bus or train stop make sure to you layer up and protect your skin.
“You may be affected more quickly than you notice. So sort of restricting the amount of time that you’re outside, particularly without gloves, without a scarf, skin exposed. That’s really where the danger comes,” Philip McCallon, the director of the School of Social Work at Temple University, said.
Cold air check list:
- Gloves
- Hat
- Scarf
- Heavy sweater under your jacket
- Long pants
- Warm socks in winter-appropriate shoes
