Businesses looking to activate the long dormant “saucer” building at Philadelphia’s LOVE Park were given a tour of the space on Wednesday.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Department believe that the iconic building, which sits on one of the busiest thoroughfares in Philly, would be a prime location for someone to come in and start a new business.
And local business owners seem to agree.
“I feel like this would be an incredible community space,” said Michelle Miller, who attended Wednesday’s tour and owns The Ground Coffee, Plants and Gifts. “Obviously, LOVE Park is iconic with the artwork. We’re in the middle of it all.”
The city required prospective vendors to attend the tour on Wednesday. Officials also provided information and answered any questions potential partners had about the space.
Officials learned more about what prospective vendors envisioned for the space.
“Our visions have this be an art café, partnering with nonprofits organizations that bring art programs throughout the city,” said Miles Butler, of Manny Hands Coffee Co. “Having this be a hub with, of course, our delicious coffee.”
Stephanie Cole, of Young American Hard Cider, said her vision also includes community participation.
“We would be doing community activations that involve music, arts, poetry… with coffee, cider,” Cole said.
Interested investors will have to formally submit a proposal in March, and the city is expected to make a selection in April.
A vendor could potentially begin activities in May. However, a more permanent setup will not be ready until at least the fall because the city will have to connect utilities and install sprinkler systems before a business takes over.
“We wanna have a beer garden or outdoor activation here as quickly as we can,” said Katie Burns Kays, the business development manager at Parks and Rec. “So, shooting for May and June on that set up and hoping that there’s something people can go through. Even something as late as the Valentines market we had this last weekend.”
Visitors to LOVE Park on Wednesday said they want something at the saucer building that can bring the whole community together.
“A safe space for families is always nice,” said Vanessa, who was visiting from Seattle.
Malachi Couch, of Philadelphia, said she also liked the idea of bringing art and creativity to the spot as well.
“I feel like something more arts and craft, or created to bring people together and create conversation and dialogue,” said Couch. “I think that would be a great approach.”
