A Secret Service agent accidentally shot himself in the leg while escorting former First Lady Jill Biden at the Philadelphia International Airport, sources said.
According to police, the incident happened on Friday, March 27, just before 9 a.m. near the 1 PIA Way access point and the Pennsylvania Tower.
Police said initial reports revealed that the agent was traveling in an unmarked Chevrolet SUV when he accidentally discharged his firearm.
Emergency medical services responded to the scene and transported the agent to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition, police said.
According to NBC10’s newsgathering partner, KYW Newsradio, sources said the Secret Service agent had been escorting former First Lady Jill Biden.
A spokesperson for the Secret Service released the following statement:
“An on-duty U.S. Secret Service Special Agent suffered a non-life-threatening injury following a negligent discharge while handling a service weapon at the Philadelphia International Airport during a protective assignment. There was no impact to the protectee’s movement and they were not present at the time of the incident. There were no reported injuries to any other individuals and the special agent is being evaluated at an area hospital in stable condition. The Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility will be reviewing the facts and circumstances of this incident.”
Authorities have held the scene for investigation, police said. There have been no reports of other injuries or disruptions to airport operations.
