An 18-year-old Deptford, New Jersey, man has been arrested and charged after a bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash in the township on Monday night.
According to police, Iqrar Ahmad, 18, of Deptford, has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene
of a fatal crash after allegedly striking a bicyclist Monday night on Delsea Drive in Deptford Township.
That crash closed the roadway to traffic for several hours overnight.
Police said the incident happened at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday, after a driver called 9-1-1 to report that they had struck a bicyclist with their vehicle.
This driver, police said, stopped at the scene, but after impact, the bicyclist — who police did not immediately provide further information on — fell into the roadway and was fatally struck by a second vehicle.
After the second impact, the driver of the second vehicle — identified by police as Ahmad — continued to drive along Delsea Drive.
About two hours later, officials claim, Ahmad returned to the scene of the crash after speaking to a family member.
At that time, officials said, he told officers that he left the scene after seeing a bike and a car along the side of the roadway then he “felt his vehicle strike an object” but he continued on, only to stop later, father north of the crash, to inspect his car.
Ahmed found damage to the lower grill, but officials said, he told police he did not know what he had struck.
Police have arrested Ahmed and he has been charged with leaving the scene of a deadly crash.
