Police in South Jersey are reminding residents to lock their car doors and hide valuables after stolen cars led officers on a wild chase which ended when one vehicle flipped onto its roof.
Officers with the Mantua Township Police Department said they were called to the Buckingham Village development around 2:47 a.m. on Saturday, April 4 after residents reported seeing people checking car doors.
When one of the patrolmen got to the neighborhood, he found a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Lestershire Drive and saw multiple suspects pulling on car door handles, officials said.
The suspects immediately got back into their Jeep and fled when they saw the officer, police explained.
As the patrolman tried to pull the Jeep over, it continued into Willingboro and then onto the northbound side of Route 55, according to police.
Meanwhile, officers reported finding two more stolen vehicles – a Kia and Hyundai – which drove away from police, prompting a chase.
As a Mantua Township police Sgt. chased the Kia, it sped onto Mercer Avenue, jumped the railroad tracks and went about 150 feet before it flipped onto its roof at the end of West Mercer Avenue, police explained.
“I heard a loud bang. I was sound asleep. When I woke up there were flashes of light outside,” Mantua resident Susan Hurff said. “My first thought was ‘Oh my gosh is anyone inside the car?'”
After the Kia crashed, the people inside all ran away from the area, officials said.
“I was having trouble keeping up with them. I would estimate over 75 miles an hour. They never hit their brakes. I just saw the vehicle’s headlights go up and the vehicle was airborne. I saw the transformer blow. They hit the wires,” Mantua Township Police Department Sgt. William Donovan said.
One young suspect was later found hurt near West Atlantic Avenue and Grey Fox Circle, police said. Officers took the person to a nearby hospital for treatment.
When the crash of the Kia happened, officers said they ended the chase of the Jeep and Hyundai.
Officials in Mantua Township are urging everyone to keep their car doors locked and remove any valuables from your vehicles.
